Devon and Cornwall Police have now confirmed that an 11-year-old girl from the South Devon area has sadly died in a tragedy at Wacker Quay at Antony near Torpoint after emergency services were called at around 6pm on Saturday 16 August 2025.
As Plymouth Plus first reported, police, paramedics, fire crews, HM Coastguard teams, specialist HART paramedics and two helicopters were all deployed in one of the largest multi-agency responses seen in the area in recent years.
Crews worked into the night in difficult muddy conditions, with floodlights and privacy screens set up along the River Lynher shoreline.
A police spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police told Plymouth Plus:
Emergency services were called at around 6pm on Saturday 16 August to Wacker Quay at Antony, near Torpoint, following concerns for a person in the water.
An 11-year-old girl, from the South Devon area, was recovered and given emergency treatment but was sadly confirmed deceased at the scene.
Her next of kin have been informed and will be supported by specialist officers.
The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Wacker Quay, on the River Lynher, is a well-known spot for walkers and anglers but its rural setting and limited access can make rescues especially challenging. Responders from across Devon and Cornwall coordinated through the night to reach the scene.
Plymouth Plus extends sincere condolences to the girl’s loved ones. We will continue to bring further updates on this story as they are issued.
