Once again two opposing groups gathered for protests in the Plymouth city centre this afternoon.
Police were deployed to ensure public safety and keep the two groups apart, with officers taking what they described as an "engagement-led approach".
A group who identify themselves as Flag Force Plymouth organised a protest stating that it was to promote patriotism and celebrate “Plymouth’s identity as a proud, patriotic naval city”.
In response, a counter protest was organised by a group who call themselves Plymouth UK Anti-Fascists, in opposition to what they describe as “racism, hate and bigotry”.
Both groups gathered on Old Town Street in the city centre, and police formed a line in an attempt to keep the groups apart.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that one arrest was made for breach of the peace following tension between those involved.
Superintendent Vicky Howell, Head of Command and Control and Regional Tactical Public Order Lead, said:
“We responded to a number of protests today where our policing presence was one of engagement.
“However we did have to intervene with an arrest for breach of the peace resulting from a small amount of tension in the city.
“This protest has also passed as a successful event.”
