Man dies after being found in river by kayakers at popular beauty spot

A man has sadly died after being found in the River Dart at a popular beauty spot.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a local 62-year-old man has died after being found in the river near Newbridge on Dartmoor.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after kayakers retrieved his body to the shoreline.

It is understood that the man was out walking alongside the river near the village of Holne at around midday when he fell down a bank and into the water.

Devon Air Ambulance, the South Western Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team, and Dartmoor Search & Rescue teams attended the incident.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said:

"Police were called at 12.30pm on Saturday 20 December by the Ambulance Service to reports of concern for a man who was located in the River Dart near Holne.
"Emergency medical care had been given at the scene but the man, aged in his 60s, was sadly confirmed deceased. His next of kin have been informed.
"The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
