Royal Navy bomb disposal experts were called to a property in Plymouth following the discovery of a grenade.

Police were called to Station Road in Keyham at around 11.30am today after the item was found inside a property.

Plymouth Plus understands the discovery was made during an end of tenancy removal after the previous occupant left a large amount of waste inside.

A worker clearing the property is believed to have uncovered the suspected grenade along with a number of knives, ammunition and a spear gun.

Nearby residents were evacuated, and a cordon was put in place while police awaited the arrival of specialists from the Royal Navy's Bravo Squadron.

The experts based at HMNB Devonport attended and determined that the item was no longer a viable explosive device.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes after the scene was declared safe.
