Labour leader faces public accusations of "lying" while refusing to apologise for the Armada Way tree massacre.
Labour Councillor Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council, faced intense criticism during Monday's council meeting, with one member of the public gallery shouting "Evans, you're a LIAR" as tensions reached boiling point over the Armada Way tree atrocity.
Contrasting Leadership Styles
The meeting highlighted a stark contrast in leadership approaches when addressing the council's shambolic handling of the tree controversy on Armada Way.
Conservative leader Andy Lugger offered an unreserved apology on behalf of his administration for their role in the project's problems, taking responsibility for past mistakes.
In contrast, Councillor Evans refused to apologise for Labour abstaining on a vote that would have halted the healthy mature trees being chainsawed mercilessly in the dead of night.
Instead, he focused on political point-scoring rather than accountability, which seemed out of place given the scale of public upset over the unnecessary loss of the Armada Way trees.
His response drew sharp criticism from observers who had hoped for similar acknowledgement of Labour's contribution to the issues.

Scapegoating Local Hero Ali White
Local hero Ali White, who founded STRAW (Save the Trees Armada Way) and campaigned tirelessly on behalf of Plymouth residents to stop the tree destruction, was reportedly used as a scapegoat by Tudor Evans.
Evans blamed the local hero for both the delays and £3.3m legal fees the council incurred as a result of their poorly thought-out tree destruction project. It was after Evans made these damning accusations that cries of "liar" and "you're a liar" were heard from the public gallery.
Crucially, Evans made these attacks on White while she had no right of reply in the chamber - a move criticised as discourteous and unfair to those unable to defend themselves in the formal setting.
Missed Opportunity for Reconciliation
Many observers, including Ali White from Straw, had hoped Evans would follow Lugger's example by offering some level of apology for his party's role in the Armada Way drama. Instead, Evans appeared to prioritise self-promotion and soundbites over genuine accountability.
Ali White said after the council meeting:
"While I was optimistic that the review would result in positive changes in Plymouth City Council I'm now not so sure. The report vindicated everything STRAW had said and yet PCC's 22 page action plan makes zero mention of rebuilding trust and the latest consultation they are running (at Manadon) is scant on details regarding trees. Another done deal perhaps?
"It's a shame that Cllr Evans believes he needs to act so inappropriately, presumably for personal or party gain. Slinging mud rather than trying to heal wounds. Perhaps the fact that his colleagues didn't call out his shocking behaviour is proof that he has normalised a culture of arrogance and bullying in the council. It saddens me that Plymouth is being led by someone for whom winning votes is so obviously more important than winning trust."
The heated exchanges underscore the deep divisions that remain over the Armada Way project and raise serious questions about Evans' leadership style and whether genuine reconciliation can occur under his approach.
