The family of a Plymouth Dad who died after waiting months for mental health treatment are just £390 short of covering his funeral costs. The appeal comes just days before the service is due to take place.
Dan Higgins, 34, sadly died on 26 June after a long struggle with his mental health. Despite seeking help, he was placed on an NHS waiting list and never received the care he needed.
After Plymouth Plus published the family’s plea, the city responded with generosity. More than £3,600 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign launched by family friend Stephanie Taylor. But with the funeral now only days away, the family still needs one last push.
Dan’s funeral will take place on Wednesday 24 July. His final journey will begin at 10am, leaving his family home and passing through Saltash Passage. The service is scheduled for 11am at Park Crematorium, followed by a wake from 12pm to 3pm at Kings Tamerton Community Centre.
Friends and family are asking those attending to wear something blue, Dan’s favourite colour.
Dan’s funeral is just a few days away and his family are still short. Even £1 helps. Please, if you’re able, give what you can today.
“With Dan’s passing, his beautiful wife, Abbie, obviously wants to celebrate him for the amazing person he was.
"Unfortunately, without a life insurance policy in place or a financial miracle, Abbie will not be able to give him even a basic funeral.
"We know times are hard for everyone, however if anyone feels they could spare even £1 to help towards Dan’s final journey, we would be forever grateful.
"All money raised will pay directly, for Dan’s funeral.”
Any extra funds will be used to create Memory Bears from Dan’s clothing for his children and wife, giving them a personal keepsake to remember him by.
Dan’s death has highlighted what his family describes as a crisis in local mental health services. A friend said Dan was forced to suffer in silence.
According to NHS England, over 16,500 people in England have been waiting more than 18 months for mental health treatment. Nearly one million people are currently on NHS waiting lists for support.
Dan’s family say they want change. But right now, they are simply asking Plymouth to help them reach their goal and give Dan the respectful farewell he deserves.
