First pictures show the WW2 bomb that has sparked a 400 metre cordon and road closures in Plymouth today.

A major emergency response has been launched following the discovery of the ordnance at a construction site on Martin Street in the Millbay area of the city.

The device was discovered during specialist ordnance investigation work being carried out at the site, with Devon and Cornwall Police called to the discovery at 11.40am today.

Officers quickly put a 100 metre cordon in place, which has since been extended to 400 metres, along with associated road closures. Residents within the cordon have been evacuated.

The bomb is believed to be a WW2 SC50, a type of German aerial bomb dating back to the Second World War.

It was uncovered during survey work carried out by S.I UXO, a company specialising in site investigation and ordnance risk management.

The Devon based specialist firm brought in CPT Percy, a detection machine, to mitigate the area for suspected unexploded ordnance.

The testing flagged an anomaly 4.3m beneath the ground, and further target investigation confirmed it to be a wartime bomb.

Royal Navy bomb disposal experts have now arrived at the scene and are assessing the device. The bomb is expected to be carefully removed from the site and is likely to be taken out to sea for a controlled detonation.

Unexploded bombs and munitions are still occasionally discovered across Plymouth due to the city’s heavy bombing during the Second World War.
