Many locals contacted Plymouth Plus after being woken up by a helicopter circling low over Keyham and shining a light this morning.
The air ambulance landed in St Levan Park at 1 am as part of an emergency response to a 'medical incident' nearby.
The landing was essential so that flying medics from the Devon Air Ambulance could provide the best care possible for a critically unwell patient.
Two land ambulances and an operational officer were also sent to the scene by the South Western Ambulance Service.
The patient was conveyed to Derriford Hospital by land ambulance, and the air ambulance took off and returned to its base at around 1.40 am.
