Smeaton’s Tower is set to join landmarks around the world, lighting up red tonight as part of World AIDS Day 2025.

The illumination has been organised by The Eddystone Trust, a local HIV and sexual health charity working across the city to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and support those living with or affected by HIV.

Every year on 1 December, landmarks around the world light up red to remember those lost to AIDS related illnesses and to show support for the millions of people living with HIV today.

The Eddystone Trust was founded in Plymouth in the late 1980s and provides free, confidential HIV testing, sexual health education, and wellbeing support to anyone who needs it.

Outreach and Support Worker at The Eddystone Trust, Matthew Welch said:

"Lighting up Smeaton’s Tower is a powerful reminder that HIV is still with us, but so is hope.
"It’s a symbol of our community’s commitment to ending stigma and standing together for equality, compassion, and awareness."

The Eddystone Trust is encouraging people across Plymouth to head to Smeaton’s Tower tonight to see it shine red, where red ribbons and donation pots will be available.

The charity is also urging people to wear a red ribbon throughout the day to stand in solidarity with those living with HIV.

You can share your photos of Smeaton’s Tower being illuminated on social media using #WorldAIDSDay and #RockTheRibbon to raise awareness and solidarity.
