# Historic Plymouth hotel hits back at "fake news" claiming asylum seekers staying there

A historic Plymouth hotel has hit back at fake news circulating online claiming it is being prepared to house asylum seekers.

The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, in [Millbay](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/tag/millbay/), issued a statement after social media posts suggested the building was being turned into an asylum hotel.

The Grade II listed hotel closed earlier this year while essential works are carried out, including repairs and safety improvements needed before it can reopen.

The claims had [already been dismissed by Plymouth City Council](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/no-asylum-hotels-in-plymouth-says-council-as-misinformation-circulates/), who confirmed no hotels in the city are being used for asylum accommodation.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Duke of Cornwall Hotel said:

> "The Duke of Cornwall is currently temporarily closed to undertake an essential improvement project. 

> "In light of recent misinformation that’s been shared online, we would like to confirm that there is no truth to the rumours about the hotel opening as an asylum hotel. 

> "Our improvement works are progressing as planned, and we look forward to welcoming our guests back through our doors when we re-open this summer."
