Horror on Plymouth street as man stabbed in the chest and sword seized

A man has been stabbed and a sword seized after armed police swarmed a busy Plymouth street in broad daylight.

Officers rushed to Mildmay Street at around 2.50pm on Saturday, 1 November after reports that a man had suffered a stab wound to the chest, possibly from a screwdriver.

The shocking incident sparked a huge emergency response, with armed officers, critical care paramedics from the Devon Air Ambulance, and South Western Ambulance Service crews racing to the scene.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment. Police say his injuries are not believed to be life threatening or life changing.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a sword has been recovered from a property as part of their ongoing investigation. Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and later released on police bail.

A woman, also in her 20s, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and has been bailed.

A third man, in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in police custody.

Detectives believe the stabbing followed an earlier altercation in nearby Hospital Road where a group of people were reportedly involved and a sword was brandished.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have mobile phone, dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage to come forward.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said:

"We are appealing for witnesses and relevant footage following a disturbance involving a number of individuals in Plymouth.
"Officers were called to the Mildmay Street area of the city at around 2.50pm on Saturday 1 November following a report a male had suffered a stab wound to the chest – possibly from a screwdriver.
"It was reported the man had been stabbed following an incident in Hospital Road during which a number of people were present and a sword was also brandished.
"Armed officers were deployed and arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of attempted murder. He has since been released on police bail.
"A woman in her 20s was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and has also been released on police bail.
"A man in his 20s has today, Monday 3 November, been arrested on suspicion on affray. He remains in police custody at this time.  
"Officers were able to recover a sword from inside a property.
"The man who was stabbed was taken to hospital following the incident. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.
"Detectives investigating the incident are appealing to anyone who witnessed the events, or who has relevant phone, dash-cam, CCTV or doorbell footage to get in touch via 101 or our website quoting 50250281906."
