A Plymouth father who was sprayed with acid in a doorstep attack died at a Bristol hospital, an inquest has heard. Nine people now face trial for murder and related charges.
Danny Tadhg Cahalane, 38, was assaulted outside his home on Lipson Road at around 3.55am on 21 February.
After initial treatment at Derriford Hospital, he was transferred to Southmead Hospital in Bristol due to the severity of his injuries. He died on 3 May.
The inquest, opened on 12 June at Exeter County Hall, was told Danny suffered extensive corrosive burns in the attack, which led to major surgery and ultimately fatal complications.
Area coroner Nicholas Lane confirmed the preliminary cause of death as complications following corrosive burns, including deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary embolisms during a prolonged stay at Southmead Hospital.
The inquest was told that the police investigation has resulted in nine individuals being arrested and charged, including Danny’s former partner.
The charges include murder, conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm, participation in the activities of an organised crime group, and possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.
Devon and Cornwall Police are leading the inquiry under Operation Lobpass, working alongside the National Crime Agency, Metropolitan Police and Wiltshire Police.
A trial is scheduled to begin at Winchester Crown Court on 13 January 2026.
In a tribute, Danny’s family said:
“As a family, we are struggling to come to terms with Danny’s passing. Danny was an outstanding father and son. Danny and his mum had so much love for each other. He is well loved by his family and friends, and as a family we cherish his love and memories.”
The inquest has been suspended until after criminal proceedings are complete.
