A major emergency operation was launched after a Royal Navy sailor became critically unwell on board HMS Sutherland.

HM Coastguard sent a search and rescue helicopter from Newquay to Plymouth Sound, where the sailor was medically evacuated from the warship and brought ashore for urgent treatment.

The helicopter landed on Plymouth Hoe, where South Western Ambulance Service paramedics were waiting to transfer the sailor onward to Derriford Hospital.

A Royal Navy confirmed that a member of HMS Sutherland was transported to hospital after becoming seriously injured.
