# Major operation after Royal Navy sailor becomes critically unwell in Plymouth

A major emergency operation was launched after a Royal Navy sailor became critically unwell on board HMS Sutherland.

[HM Coastguard](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/tag/hm-coastguard/) sent a search and rescue helicopter from Newquay to [Plymouth Sound](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/tag/plymouth-sound/), where the sailor was medically evacuated from the warship and brought ashore for urgent treatment.

The helicopter landed on [Plymouth Hoe](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/tag/plymouth-hoe/), where [South Western Ambulance Service](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/tag/south-western-ambulance-service/) paramedics were waiting to transfer the sailor onward to [Derriford Hospital](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/tag/derriford-hospital/). 

A Royal Navy confirmed that a member of HMS Sutherland was transported to hospital after becoming seriously injured. 

The spokesperson added that the sailor’s condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
