Major search launched on Plymouth Hoe as person walks away before help arrives

A major emergency response was launched on Plymouth Hoe this evening after reports of a person in distress. They left the scene on their own accord before rescue teams arrived.

HM Coastguard received the alert at around 5.50pm. In response, the Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team was deployed along with a search and rescue helicopter and the RNLI Plymouth lifeboat.

Eyewitnesses described seeing a helicopter flying over the Hoe as Coastguard teams gathered near the waterfront, prompting concern among people nearby.

Despite the scale of the response, the person had already left safely without needing assistance. No injuries have been reported.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard told Plymouth Plus:

"HM Coastguard were alerted to reports of a person in distress at Plymouth Hoe.
"Made aware at around 5.50pm, Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked alongside an HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter and Plymouth lifeboat.
"The person left the scene of their own accord before assets arrived. "
