Man found after huge emergency response on Plymouth Hoe

A man in his 30s has been found safe following a major emergency operation on Plymouth Hoe late on Monday night.

The large-scale response was triggered shortly after 10pm on 16 June after reports of a man who may have entered the water following threats to harm himself.

A major multi-agency search was quickly launched across the Hoe and Plymouth Sound. Plymouth Plus provided live updates on this incident as it unfolded.

Emergency services at the scene included Devon and Cornwall Police, HM Coastguard, the Ministry of Defence Police boat, and the RNLI Plymouth lifeboat.

Search lights were used to sweep the shoreline while emergency vehicles lined the waterfront. Lifeboats and police vessels scanned the sea in an intense coordinated effort that lasted over an hour.

At around 11.35pm, the man was located safe by police in the city centre and was returned home following welfare checks.

Earlier in the evening, HM Coastguard confirmed the incident in a statement to Plymouth Plus:

"HM Coastguard is currently responding to an incident at Plymouth Hoe.
"Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team has been sent, alongside RNLI Plymouth lifeboat. The incident is ongoing."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police told Plymouth Plus:

"Police were called at 10.05pm on Monday 16 June following concern for the welfare of a man on Plymouth Hoe.

"The man had reported threats to harm himself, possibly by entering the sea.

"Officers, ambulance, the MOD launch boat, HM Coastguard and the RNLI carried out a land and sea search for him.

"The man in his 30s was located safe by police in the city centre around 11.35pm and returned home following welfare checks."
