Man rescued from Dartmoor in urgent night time airlift

A man was airlifted to Plymouth after suffering a medical emergency on Dartmoor in the early hours of Sunday.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Tavistock were called out at 2.04am by the South Western Ambulance Service.

It was reported that a casualty was suffering from low blood sugar, and a search and rescue helicopter was requested.

A hasty hill party was then sent to the incident location on Fur Tor, with a second party preparing to bring additional medical equipment if needed.

HM Coastguard R924 helicopter from Newquay arrived on scene at 3.38am and assessed the casualty for evacuation.

During the incident, emergency services were also alerted to a separate casualty deep on Dartmoor at Wild Tor.

Ambulance control then requested the helicopter attend to that second emergency.

The Tavistock search and rescue team control unit remained at Baggator Gate until the helicopter departed, then returned to its base at 5.20am.

The helicopter later landed at RM Bickleigh in Plymouth, where the man was passed into the care of a land paramedics.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said:

“A man reported with a medical condition at Fur Tor, Dartmoor, at about 1.30am on 29 March was airlifted by an HM Coastguard helicopter and passed into the care of the South Western Ambulance Service.”
