Saltash runner Simon Wengradt, better known as the ‘nearly naked runner’, is closing in on an incredible challenge.

To mark his 50th birthday, Simon set himself the challenge of running 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days, covering over 1,300 miles across Saltash and surrounding areas.

His goal is not just to push his limits but to raise vital funds for the Saltash Youth Network, a charity supporting youth organisations throughout the town.

Simon’s journey has not been an easy one. Several years ago, he found himself on a walking stick after a back injury at work. The physical pain was compounded by depression and struggles with addiction.

Diagnosed with ADHD and REM sleep behaviour disorder, Simon was determined not to be defined by these challenges. He turned his life around through a strict focus on physical and mental wellbeing.

Simon credits the Wim Hof Method, which combines breathing techniques with cold water therapy, for playing a huge part in his recovery. After discovering the technique three years ago, Simon came off all medication within weeks and slowly returned to running, yoga, and daily strength training.

Running bare-chested in all weathers, even through freezing winters, has become Simon’s trademark. His minimalist approach, part of his Wim Hof practice, has made him a familiar figure pounding the pavements of Saltash.

His post-run recovery is equally unconventional. Simon plunges straight into cold water, sometimes rivers, sometimes reservoirs, to help reduce inflammation. He even rubs stinging nettles on his legs to stimulate blood flow and aid muscle recovery.

Every penny raised will go directly to the Saltash Youth Network, which provides grants, hardship funds, and crucial support to around 20 youth groups in the area.

Simon set a target of raising £5,000 and donations have been flowing steadily. He is hoping to surpass his goal by the end of the challenge and ensure every youth group receives the funding they need to continue offering opportunities for local young people.

For Simon, this challenge is about more than fundraising. It is about resilience, mental health, and proving that setbacks do not have to define you. A two-time recovering alcoholic and drug addict, Simon’s message to others facing mental health struggles is clear.

Get outside, even if only for a short walk, and reconnect with nature. He believes movement is the best medicine available, better than anything prescribed. Running has given him a sense of space to clear his mind, and he plans to continue running every day even after completing the 50th marathon.

With just a few marathons left, Simon continues to inspire the Saltash community. His story of transformation and determination is resonating widely, showing what can be achieved with focus and support.

Simon’s incredible effort highlights the power of resilience and community spirit, reminding everyone that no matter the obstacles, anything is possible with the right mindset.
