Person killed after being struck by GWR train in Plymouth overnight

A person has sadly died after being struck by a train in Plymouth overnight. The incident occurred at approximately 11.30pm and involved the 20:03 GWR service from London Paddington, which was approaching Plymouth.

South Western Ambulance Service dispatched an ambulance and an operational officer to the scene. The Devon Air Ambulance was also sent but was stood down prior to arriving as the person was pronounced deceased.

British Transport Police attended alongside Devon and Cornwall Police. Firefighters from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were also called to assist.

Passengers on the London to Plymouth train were held on board for around three hours before an evacuation occurred at about 2.40am. Dozens of taxis were sent to transport the stranded passengers from the scene to their final destinations, including Plymouth and Liskeard stations. A private ambulance later attended.

When a fatality occurs on the railway, lines are usually closed while emergency services work at the scene. Investigations are then carried out to establish the circumstances and ensure the route can reopen safely.
