Plymouth City Council made thousands of pounds in a single day after they caught dozens of people visiting the city’s popular Comic Con event driving through a bus stop.

Plymouth Plus witnessed at least 30 vehicles attending the Comic Con event at Marjon Sport and Health Centre drive through the restricted bus lane, completely unaware that they were being filmed by a hidden traffic enforcement camera.

Each motorist will now receive a £70 fine in the post, meaning Plymouth City Council is set to profit more than £2,000 in penalties in a single day.

Drivers were seen following one another through the bus stop lane, seemingly unaware that it was restricted. Several told Plymouth Plus they believed it was a normal route to the event car park. Others said their sat navs had directed them that way without any warning. One attendee told us:

“Everyone was driving through it, so we thought it must be fine. We had no idea there were cameras until you said.”

Locals say the enforcement zone is intended to protect bus routes but has turned into a money maker for the council when big events attract visitors who do not know the area near Derriford Hospital well.

Anyone who pays within 14 days will have their fine reduced to £35. Penalties can increase significantly if no payment is made.
