Tonight, Plymouth is at a historic crossroads as residents head to the polls to vote on whether to retain Council Leader Tudor Evans or introduce a directly-elected mayor.
The referendum follows a successful petition of 10,856 verified signatures, which triggered today’s public vote on how the city should be governed.
A total of 15 campaign groups have emerged across the city campaigning for the idea of a directly-elected leader.
From grassroots community leaders and veterans to musicians, health professionals and business owners, the groups reflect a diverse and growing movement calling for democratic change.
Supporters include 'Mayor for Plymouth', 'Care For A Mayor', 'Plymouth Disability Action – Yes To A Mayor', 'Veterans for Mayor', 'Save Democracy', and 'Women for a Mayor'.
In contrast, the anti-mayor campaign 'Plymouth Knows Better' is backed by the Labour Party and run by councillor Chris Cuddihee.
