Plymouth city centre will see two rival protests this Sunday 7 September as groups with opposing messages plan to gather on Royal Parade.

Flag Force Plymouth is inviting people to meet by the pedestrian crossing near Poundland at 5pm, encouraging supporters to bring St George’s Cross or Union flags and to wear flag themed clothing.

Organisers say the event is intended to be “peaceful and lawful” and have asked those attending not to cover their faces, not to use hate speech, and not to retaliate if provoked. They add that free flags and patriotic merchandise will be handed out to those joining.

A counter protest has also been organised by Plymouth anti-fascists, who say they will meet at the Sundial at 4pm before moving to Royal Parade. Their announcement describes the flag protest as being part of “far right mobilisation” and urges people to take a stand against racism and fascism. Their statement says the world is “at a turning point” and calls on supporters to “act now” to protect communities.

Both events are being promoted on social media and are expected to overlap in the city centre. The gatherings could cause disruption around Royal Parade and Armada Way, particularly for buses and traffic early on Sunday evening.

The demonstrations come less than a week after a protest was held outside Plymouth City Council’s headquarters over their removal of St George’s flags.

Organisers on both sides have set out their expectations for conduct, with Flag Force Plymouth stressing the need for a peaceful event and anti fascist groups framing their response as opposition to hostility towards migrants and communities.
