Plymouth Plus can reveal that the new speed camera on Victoria Road was cut down in the middle of the night in what appears to be a deliberate act of vandalism.

The bright yellow fixed speed enforcement camera was installed on a lamppost only a few months ago to curb speeding on the busy residential road in St Budeaux.

The camera vanished overnight after the lamppost holding it was sliced in half. The remnants have now been covered with tape as a safety precaution.

The camera was installed as part of a six month safety trial between Plymouth City Council and Devon and Cornwall Police after years of complaints from people living in St Budeaux about speeding traffic, noise and crashes.

Councillor John Stephens said at the time that Victoria Road had suffered a number of collisions, including fatalities, and that the new camera was being loaned to police free of charge to test a new supplier.

Devon and Cornwall Police and Plymouth City Council has been contacted for comment.
