A trans rights protest is set to take place in Plymouth this week in response to new EHRC guidance.

Organisers say people are invited to attend and show solidarity in response to the Equality and Human Rights Commission's updated guidance on single-sex spaces.

The new guidance, which has been laid before Parliament, follows [the Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of sex](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/trans-rights-protest-planned-in-plymouth-this-saturday-after-landmark-court-ruling/) under the Equality Act.

The court ruled that individuals who do not hold a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) cannot be legally recorded as the opposite sex on certain official documents.

The judgment was made in the case of a transgender woman who sought to be listed as “mother” on their child’s birth certificate without having obtained a GRC.

The EHRC has said the updated guidance is intended to help organisations understand how to comply with the Equality Act following the legal changes.

Organisers say the protest has been arranged in response to what they describe as an “attack on trans rights”.

They say the demonstration will call for policies and guidance that protect and uphold the rights of transgender people.

A spokesperson for the organisers said the event is intended to be “peaceful, inclusive and respectful” and will provide an opportunity for people to stand in solidarity with the trans community.

Those attending are being encouraged to bring placards, banners and messages of support while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere throughout the protest.

The protest will take place at Frankfort Gate from 12pm on Friday 5 June.
