# Tree of Heaven comes crashing down on top of Plymouth shoppers

A 'Tree of Heaven' has come crashing down on top of shoppers this afternoon (18 August). 

The tree was located next to the Fabulous Falafel food vendor on New George Street in the [Plymouth City Centre](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/tag/plymouth-city-centre/).

People were sitting underneath the tree when it came down, although remarkably nobody suffered any physical injuries.

[Plymouth City Council](https://www.plymouthplus.co.uk/tag/plymouth-city-council/) said a large branch suddenly split from the rest of the tree at around lunchtime today. 

The tree is believed to have been planted in the 1980s and was last inspected in July, when no issues were identified other than the need to prune its crown.

The council believe the tree may have been suffering from heat stress due to the ongoing high temperatures.
