Firefighters rushed to a quiet Plymouth cul-de-sac after two much-loved family dogs were electrocuted by a lamppost and rendered unconscious.

Bella and Ruby, both French bulldog breeds, collapsed on Delaware Gardens in Weston Mill on Tuesday night after receiving an electric shock from a lamppost.

The dogs had been out on their usual evening walk when the incident happened.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called on 999 and arrived within minutes, establishing a cordon around the dangerous lamppost.

Lampposts transmit power at over 200 volts, and Plymouth City Council were asked to attend the incident as they own and maintain the city's lampposts.

It comes just days after Plymouth City Council confirmed national flags on their lampposts across the city will now be removed for 'safety' reasons.

Thankfully, Bella and Ruby are expected to make a full recovery, but their owner says they have been ‘left shaken and frightened' by the incident.

A spokesperson for Plymouth City Council said:

"Our highways team were asked to attend an incident in Delaware Gardens by the fire service after reports of a pet receiving an electric shock from a lamp column.
"The fault was found to be a National Grid earthing issue and which they have resolved."
