Bomb disposal specialists have returned to a Plymouth building site amid fears more wartime bombs could still be hidden beneath the ground.

Experts have been spotted carrying out fresh investigations at the Bath Street development in Millbay, just months after an unexploded WW2 bomb sparked a major incident forcing the evacuation of more than 800 residents.

Work to prepare the site for a new social housing development has stalled once again while specialist unexploded ordnance (UXO) contractors carry out further surveys of the land.

Concerned locals contacted Plymouth Plus after noticing a surge in activity at the site in recent days.

UXO contractors S.I UXO have been seen working at the site with their cone penetration testing machine, CPT Percy, scanning the ground.

Red and blue flags are also dotted across the building site. It is understood work is being carried out to be absolutely sure there are no further bombs beneath the ground before the bulk of the construction work begins.

The development is being delivered by Plymouth Community Homes in partnership with Plymouth City Council.

The first phase of the £33.5 million scheme is expected to deliver 80 new homes for social rent and one commercial unit, with the wider development set to provide up to 135 affordable homes overall.
