A large fire has broken out at a vacant Plymouth City Council owned building in Plymouth overnight.

Around six fire engines, an aerial ladder platform and a water carrier were sent to the scene at Douglass House in Efford.

The incident comes just weeks after plans were submitted to redevelop the site for 21 new homes.

Funding was secured in 2024 through the government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund to demolish the vacant office building and prepare the land for housing.

The council allocated the £540,000 grant into its capital programme and said it would enter discussions with local housing partners once the site had been cleared.

Affordable homes specialist Westward Housing is now taking the scheme forward and has submitted a pre-application enquiry to Plymouth City Council.
