Major fire in Plymouth overnight with homes destroyed

A major fire ripped through a block of flats in the Sherford area of Plymouth overnight leaving families homeless and sparking one of the city’s biggest rescue operations in recent years.

The blaze broke out on Aquila Drive early on Friday morning and quickly tore through the residential building as terrified residents scrambled to safety. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed but an investigation is now underway.

According to eyewitness reports, approximately 30 people including young children were rescued by emergency crews with firefighters working through the night to bring the flames under control.
