A man and a woman have sadly lost their lives at a popular holiday destination in Cornwall.
A major search and rescue operation was launched at Fistral Beach in Newquay last night (26 July), which led to two bodies being recovered from the water.
Police were called by the South Western Ambulance Service following reports that two people had been recovered from the sea at South Fistral.
Dozens of emergency vehicles rushed to the scene alongside the HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924 from Newquay.
Newquay RNLI lifeboats, Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team and a critical care car from Cornwall Air Ambulance also responded.
A police cordon was put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident and has since been removed.
Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the man and woman were both pronounced deceased at the scene.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said:
"Police were called by the South Western Ambulance Service at around 9.45pm on Sunday 26 July following reports that two people had been recovered from the water at Fistral Beach, Newquay.
"Emergency services attended and a cordon was put in place, which has since been removed.
"Sadly, a man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their families have been informed, and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.
"A file will be prepared for HM Coroner."
