Plymouth City Council has said there are no asylum hotels in Plymouth after misinformation circulated.
A social media post claimed that a historic Plymouth hotel was being used to house asylum seekers.
Despite the claims, the hotel is not currently able to host guests due to building safety related issues.
A planning application has been submitted to the council for various works so that the hotel can reopen to the public.
The misinformation was shared in a post on Facebook by an account called "Think Not Follow".

They claimed an asylum hotel had been confirmed in Plymouth and suggested the Duke of Cornwall Hotel had been refurbished for these purposes.

Plymouth City Council has now spoken out and said that the information is "fake news". A spokesperson said:
"We have seen that there are rumours spreading online about a hotel in the city that is currently closed that is apparently “being prepped” to be a hotel for asylum seekers.
"This is fake news! There are no hotels in the city, open or closed being prepped for this purpose.
"To reflect the further fake news from people’s comments below - there are NO hotels in the city being used as asylum hotels."
