Plymouth now has its second Reform councillor after Southway ward councillor Carol Ney announced that she has joined Reform UK.

Cllr Ney was originally elected as a Labour councillor before leaving the party in 2025 and continuing to sit on Plymouth City Council as an Independent.

Her latest move now means Reform UK has a second seat on the council, alongside Steve Ricketts, who joined the party earlier this year.

Speaking to Plymouth Plus, Cllr Ney said she left Labour because it was no longer “the party of the people” and that it no longer represented working residents facing the cost of living crisis.

She added that there had been a major political shift over the past 12 months, with more people now looking for a different alternative.

Explaining why she had now chosen to join Reform, Cllr Ney said she had reached the conclusion that there was “only so much I can do on my own”. She added:

"I did not come into public life to sit quietly, keep my head down, and watch residents be let down.
"My residents deserve more than gestures. They deserve action. They deserve a stronger voice. And they deserve representatives who are prepared to back real change."

Vowing to continue working hard for Southway residents, Cllr Ney said:

“I will always put them first, and I will never stop fighting for the people and places that matter to me.”
