A group of Travellers have forced entry into Victoria Park just two days after police prevented them from breaking into a nearby school.
Around 12 caravans arrived at the park shortly after 10pm last night (3 August) and established an unauthorised encampment.
Plymouth Plus understands that this is the same group of Irish Travellers who were previously staying at Central Park.
It comes after police attended Devonport High School for Boys on Sunday (2 August) after the same group attempted to access the school grounds.
Officers successfully moved the group on from the school premises.
The Travellers then made their way to the George Park and Ride for a quick overnight stay before moving to Victoria Park last night.
Police gave the group a friendly welcome after they promised officers that they would “be peaceful”.
The arrival has already caused disruption, with Plymouth City Council forced to move today’s free Fit and Fed event from Victoria Park to Central Park.
The summer holidays family event was due to take place at Victoria Park between 10am and 2pm today.
Plymouth City Council said: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Fit and Fed team will be at Central Park today instead of Victoria Park."
An antiques fair is also set to take place at Victoria Park this weekend. It is currently unknown whether the event will be able to go ahead as planned.
