Travellers return to Plymouth Park and Ride just days after court order

At least 15 caravans have returned to the George Park and Ride just days after Plymouth City Council spent thousands trying to evict them.

The site, which is regularly used by NHS staff commuting to Derriford Hospital, has been affected by an unauthorised encampment for several weeks.

Travellers initially left the site last week after being served with a possession order obtained by the council.

At the time, a council spokesperson confirmed that a clean up operation had been carried out, including litter picking, bin removals and a sweep of the area.

However, the group returned over the weekend, prompting fresh anger from users of the transport link and nearby residents who say the land should have been secured after the unauthorised encampment vacated the site.

Several people have voiced their frustration over the situation, raising concerns about alleged anti-social behaviour, damage to vehicles and disruption for people travelling to and from work after long shifts. One person told Plymouth Plus:

“The last thing we need when we come back from working 12 hour shifts is to be met with damaged cars and harassment.”

Plymouth Plus asked the council what steps were being taken to prevent repeated incursions and protect the site. The council did not address this question and instead referred us to information published on their website.

According to the council’s website, the encampment has now been served with another 24 hour Notice to Quit.

As the council already holds a possession order relevant to members of this encampment, they are now in the process of obtaining a high court eviction.

The council’s published guidance outlines that it must balance the concerns of local residents with its legal duties and welfare responsibilities towards Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities when dealing with unauthorised encampments.
