Man dies on Coastguard helicopter after rescue off Plymouth coast

A man has died on board a HM Coastguard helicopter after being rescued from waters off Plymouth on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were alerted on Sunday morning, 22 June after reports of a man going overboard from a vessel in waters off Plymouth.

HM Coastguard and the RNLI responded and the man, a German national in his 70s, was airlifted to the designated landing site at RM Bickleigh.

He was sadly pronounced dead on board the helicopter. The incident prompted a full investigation involving forensics, detectives and armed officers.

It comes after the suspension of HM Coastguard helicopter landings at Derriford Hospital, following the death of a woman caused by downdraft.

Police have confirmed the man’s death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for HM Coroner.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police told Plymouth Plus:

"Police were notified by Coastguard at around midday on Sunday 22 June, to reports of a man going overboard from vessel which was located in waters off Plymouth.
"Officers attended and assisted partner agencies.
"The man, a German national in his 70s, was airlifted by Coastguard back to land before being pronounced deceased.
"His next of kin has been informed. 
"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner."
