HMS Queen Elizabeth has dominated Plymouth Sound today as it makes a short visit to the city.

The 65,000-tonne warship is understood to only be visiting for the day, but people may still have a chance to spot her off the south coast as she takes part in training.

There is a visible security presence around the ship this afternoon, with at least three Ministry of Defence Police boats seen maintaining a perimeter on the water.

MOD Police officers have also been seen keeping watch on land from the Bovisand beach car park.

It comes just days after HMS Queen Elizabeth returned home to Portsmouth following planned docking work at Rosyth Royal Dockyard in Scotland.

The Royal Navy flagship, which is one of the most powerful warships ever built for the Royal Navy, is now preparing for an intensive period at sea.

Her crew are preparing to take part in a Nato exercise as part of the alliance’s Allied Response Force before she undergoes another period of planned maintenance in June.

HMS Queen Elizabeth is capable of carrying up to 40 aircraft and is designed to operate as the centrepiece of a UK carrier strike group.

Despite Plymouth being home to HMNB Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe, HMS Queen Elizabeth is too large to come into dock in the city.
