Plymouth Plus can reveal that another two WW2 bombs have discovered in Plymouth this week.

The devices were found just one day before the major incident in Southway, where a German SC250 WW2 bomb sparked the evacuation of more than 1,200 homes.

Police were called to the discovery of the unexploded ordnance (UXO) at a commercial site on Sutton Road.

Officers attended the scene and located two items, which are thought to be artillery mortar shells.

Royal Navy UXO specialists from Bravo Squadron based at HMNB Devonport were called to the scene to assess and dispose of the devices.

A cordon was put in place, which led to the closure of St John’s Bridge Road and Shepherd’s Lane by Plymouth City Council highways teams.

Thankfully, the devices were much smaller than the Southway bomb and were not as volatile, meaning they could be taken away for safe disposal.

In the future, it is expected that many more unexploded wartime bombs could be found across the Plymouth area.
